Naturopathy and Cancer

Did you know that there are more and more people becoming cancer survivors over the years? In fact, certain adult types of cancer even have a 70 percent survival rate. But despite all of these statistics, cancer is still considered the number two leading cause of death. The good thing is that there are a number of things which you can do that not only assist in preventing and treating cancer but can also help people to cope with the different side effects of cancer.

Overview of Naturopathy

Naturopathy can be considered a complementary branch of medicine that makes use of safe and natural therapies.  The additions of naturopathic therapies to the traditional treatments of cancer can enhance and improve the effectiveness of these treatments by promoting an overall state of good health, eliminating and reducing risk factors that promote cancer growth, and improving and enhancing the success of conventional treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy while reducing the side effects. Naturopathic treatments are known to be treatment specific, tumor specific and most importantly patient specific. By using the strengths of naturopathy and the strengths of traditional treatments, a patient with cancer can significantly improve their well-being, their motivation, their positive outlook, their vitality and their chances of surviving cancer.

Nutrition and Cancer

Good nutrition plays a vital role not only in the treatment of cancer, but also in its prevention. Different studies have shown that nutrition, and exercise or physical activities, are the top 2 essential aspects that can be modified to prevent the occurrence of, and halt the progression of cancer. Poor nutrition can create a favorable environment in which cancer can grow and develop.

Although a healthy balanced diet does not guarantee a life free from cancer, it can help in different ways to reduce the risk of cancer. The following are some recommendations for you, that you can do to help decrease your chances of developing cancer:

  • Eat fresh, unprocessed, hormone-free and unrefined foods such as fruits, vegetables, soy, beans, whole grains, beans, cold water fish, garlic, onions, tomatoes, ginger, mushrooms and plenty of fibre rich foods.
  • Avoid dairy products, sugar, refined foods, caffeine, alcohol, nitrates, and junk foods.
  • Limit high fat foods
  • Drink filtered and/or spring water.  Avoid fluoridated and chlorinated water.

Naturopathy and Conventional Treatments

Chemotherapy is often a part of the cancer treatment plan, but its side effects can be damaging just like cancer.  Naturopathy can increase the effectiveness of the chemotherapy while reducing side effects, reduce risk of secondary cancer, and prevent long term complications. Even though there are drugs that are available on the market to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy, naturopathic therapy can also support and protect the body throughout the treatment.   It is a true complementary medicine.

Radiation therapy destroys rapidly growing cells.  However, it cannot differentiate between healthy cells that grow rapidly, and cancer cells.  Different side effects can occur from the death of the healthy cells which can even be fatally serious.  Naturopathy can improve the benefits of radiation while reducing the damage to healthy cells.

So naturopathic therapies are very safe.  In fact, find yourself a good naturopath and by combining orthodox medicine with other natural healing methods, it will help you in speeding up your process of recovery and healing.
